Lesson One Overview

Introduction to the Mussar Method

In this first lesson Alan presents an overview of the Mussar method. Through the lecture and the readings, you will learn about its roots in the Jewish tradition and about Alan’s rediscovery of this practice of spiritual transformation based on the Torah.

You will begin the practice of the Mussar method this lesson by reading the Introduction and Chapter 7 in With Heart in Mind. It is traditional to start Mussar study and practice with the trait of humility because this inner quality brings into focus all aspects of ego. Please read Chapter 7 at the beginning of the week, so that you can spend the rest of the week thinking about “humility” and your relationship to this particular trait.

Upon completing the video lesson and readings, you can engage with the weekly practice and self-reflection. While you are not required to complete the assignments for each lesson before moving on to the next lesson, your level of engagement with these assignments will help determine your level of benefit from the Mussar practice.

Upon completion of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Explain the origins of the Mussar method in the Jewish tradition
  • Describe where one practices the Mussar method
  • Explain a primary goal of practicing the Mussar method
  • Describe your talents and accomplishments while denoting from where they derive
